Hello Eva I have spent some time looking at you McKay info. and these are my findings . based on images of the original parish records. to avoid confusion I have called them Alexander (1) Alexander(2) Alexander (3) Alexander McKay (1) born 27/8/1811 in Dornoch is the son of Alexander(2) and Catherine Murray Alexander (2) was married to Catherine Murray 16/1/1806 in Dornoch. He is recorded as a shoemaker. The marriage was not in Creich and was not recorded in the Parish Registers for Creich. Creich wasmentioned in the Parish Registers for Dornoch, alongside their marriage announcement because it was obligatory to state if either party did not live in the parish in which they were married. Catherine was stated as " Catherine Murray, parish of Chreich" which was where she lived. With regard to Alexander McKay (2) who married Catherine Murray in 1806 I cannot find a birth for him. Having only got the wedding announcement there is no hint to his age, where he was born, or who his parents were.I have searched all the Alexander McKays of a suitable birthdate in Dornoch , but believe me there are hundreds of them!! Sutherland is the original homeland of the McKay clan! Alexander McKay (3) who married Katherine Murray 3/3/1782 in Dornoch was a farmer. This is stated in the Parish register. His farm was in Prosie near Dornoch ( nowadays spelt Procy). Katherine Murray was a widow. she was formerly married to a man called James Barclay. They had a daughter Margaret on 26/2/1783 and another daughter Mary ion 12/10/1788. As far as the records go they did not have a son. If Alexander McKay (3) was married to someone before he married Katherine Murray then it is possible that Alexander (2) is a son by that previous marriage, But the parish registers do not record him as being a widower, which they usually did if that was the case( as with Katherine). There are no records of a previous marriage for Alexander ( 3). There are no Parish records for a birth of Alexander McKay born 1777 which you mentioned. the only record of this is one posted by a member of the Latter Day Saints on the Family search site which has no authentication to prove it. I hope this isn't too confusing, and I haven't quite solved your problem, but I hope it helps. Let me know if I can help you in any other way. I have all of the copies of the images from which I have taken this information. You are welcome to have copies but I am not sure how well they would scan to e-mail. Some of them are not very good quality. All the best with your research. By the way did you visit Dornoch. Did you find any relatives.? Anthea Notify Administrator about this message?
