My GGrandmother was Minnie McKeil, 1858-1892, who married Marshall Fletcher in 1880 at Halifax, NS. Her parents were Nathaniel & Lydia McKeil. Nathaniel described as Ships' Carpenter. Origin not known. A Lizzie McKeil was one of the witnesses at the wedding - sister or aunt?
I've searched a long while for Scottish connection - my mother says Nathaniel was reputed to be an 'Orangeman' - a member of the Orange Order, most of whom are in Ulster, Northern Ireland but several in Scotland. However I can find no trace of the name in either Scotland or Ireland, historic or present. May be a Netherlands (Dutch) origin? - big Orange connection there.
Best wishes
