Hi Carolyn, I too have searched for confirmation of Sir John McKim and his knighthood, which family legend has following his efforts during the seige of Londonderry and granted by William of Orange in about 1689. When in Ireland in 2001, I spent some time in the central library in Londerry, and could find no reference to John McKim in connection with this event let alone his knighthood. I also checked in two genealogy centers and the National Library in Dublin with no results. You are likely well aware that McKim (also McKimm) is a well recognized Irish surname of Scots origin, found mainly in Co. Derry, and is a sept (sub-clan) of the Fraser clan. I confirmed this in several books of Irish surnames (including MacLysaght). It is derived from MacShim which is in turn derived from the gaelic MacShimidh which means son of Simon, related to the notable 14th century clan leader Simon Fraser. I found 35 listings for McKim and McKimm in the Northern Ireland phone book, and 6 for McKim in the adjacent Co. Sligo in the Republic, so the family is still represented in Ireland. My belief is that the McKims came to Ireland as part of the re-settlement of Scots there. Further, I did find a reference to a McKim member of Cromwell's army claiming a land grant in Ireland following Cromwell's invasion . I hope these few items are of interest.
