Mehans from Alsace-Lorraine

The story my dad was told was that his family was originally fron the provinces between France and Germany, and emigrated to Ireland or Scotland during the French Revolution or thereabouts: to "escape the guillotine". The spelling may have changed somewhere along the line, perhaps it was Mahen, we don't know. Has anyone else heard this one? We've often wondered. Apparently my dad's family didn't talk to each other much. There is a rumor that our branch of the family may have relatives in Pennsylvania.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
