I have recently begun research on the ancestry of Strangeman Modglin of Chatham County, North Carolina, and have developed some theories about his lineage. Could someone out there, open a discussion with me on this topic, and I will gladly share information that I am finding in return for information from you. I believe Strangeman Modglin was a brother to Newman Modglin and Trueman Modglin, and Young Modglin, all of Chatham Co., NC during the period of 1771-1800. In turn, these men were sons of John and Amy Modglin, of Northampton, Bute, Warren, and Chatham Counties, North Carolina. The name Modglin was previously written as Maldesley, Maltesley, and may have come from the name Maultsby. John Modglin/Maldesley appears in Northampton County as early as 1751, and may be the John, son of John Maultsby who died in Bladen County, N.C. in 1749. The only real difference between Maldesley and Maultsby is that the "b" in Maultsby was read as "le" and became Maultsley. The change of the name Maldesley to Modglin can be proven, and the family can be clearly shown moving from Northampton, to Bute, to Chatham. My only problem right now is proving a connection between Newman Modglin and Trueman Modglin, with Strangeman Modglin.
