Following is a theory, with documentation, that Truman Modglin and Anaper Burns we married August, 1783 in Chatham County North Carolina. This is a collaborating effort between three Modglin researchers. Truman’s wife has been listed as ‘Mary Ann’, with no maiden name, for a long time because of census and other records. One researcher has been steadfast in her contention that Truman’s wife’s name was Anaper Burns, daughter of John Burns Sr. However many researchers are firm in their belief that Anaper Burns was married to Strangeman Modglin.
First let’s look at Anaper Burns. All we really know about her is she is mentioned in her fathers will dated March 22, 1811. She is listed as ‘Anaper Modglin’ in the will. She is obviously married to a Modglin. Many researchers list her name as “Anapler”. I would go with the Anaper.
Second, let’s look at Strangeman Modglin. Strangeman was born about 1750 in North Carolina. Most researchers now believe that he married Chloe Patterson in 1783 in Chatham, NC. He can be traced in the census listing as follows:
1790- Chatham, NC – Ages – 2 males over 16
1800- Fayetteville, Anson, NC – Ages – 1 male over 45
1810- Randolph Co., Illinois – No Ages
1818- Pope Co., Illinois – No Ages
1820- Pope Co., Illinois – 1 male 45 plus
1830- Pope Co., Illinois – 1 male 60-70
There are 3 other sources that mention Strangeman Modglin:
1833 Pope Co., Illinois: Strangeman & Chloe Modglin sell land.
1836 Strangeman Modglin was on the Tax list for Washington, Co., Ark.
1837 S. Margelin was on the Benton Co., Ark. Tax list.
With these records we can pretty well track Strangman Modglin. Since he is not in the 1840 census we can assume that he died between 1837 and 1840 in Arkansas. We know from the 1833 record that he and Chloe are still together. There is another Strangman Modglin listed, in Gallatin Co., IL census in 1840 but the age for the male is between 20 – 30, possibly a son or nephew.
Lastly, let’s look at Truman Modglin. He was born about 1758 in North Carolina. All known records seem to indicate he and Strangeman were brothers. Most researchers believe he married a woman name Mary Ann. Nobody would even guess who her parents were. It is also agreed that he and this Mary Ann were married in Chatham Co., NC in August 1783. He can also be traced in the census records as follows:
1790- Chatham, NC – Ages – 1 male over 16
1800- Fayetteville, Anson, NC – Ages – 1 male between 26 and 44.
1810- No listing – It is believed he and “Mary Ann” were in Wilson County TN at this time but the census records, I believe were destroyed. He is not on the 1804 Wilson County Tax list.
1820 – Listing for Mary Ann Modglin, Wilson County, TN.
1830 – No listing
1840 – Listing for Mary Ann Modglin, Johnson Co., IL, living next door to her son, Benton Modglin.
It is known that Truman died on March 22, 1820, before the census was taken. Mary Ann’s age range is 45 plus in the 1820 census for Wilson County, TN.
There are several key documents that relate to Truman and Anaper/Mary Ann Modglin.
1. 1839 Revolutionary War pension application made out by Mary Ann Modglin. It states they were married in July or August, 1783. He then joined the war shortly after they were married.
2. 1839 Testimonial by Higdon Harrington, son-in-law of Truman and Anaper/Mary Ann confirming his service.
3. And the most convincing document that one researcher has in her possession. It is the 19th century church rolls for central Tennessee. On it shows an entry, dated 1811, for 2 Modglin’s, Anaper and Truman, as members of the Big Cedar Lick Church (now the Mt. Olivet Baptist Church) ……………….
So, we have pretty well rule out Strangeman Modglin because it is well documented that he married Chloe Patterson. He is traced from Chatham County NC through Pope County, IL to Benton Co., Ark.
Now we have Truman Modglin, whose wife went by “Mary Ann” but she showed up in 1811 on the church rolls as Anaper Modglin, with Truman.
Our conclusion is that Truman Modglin married Anaper Burns in Chatham County, NC in August 1783. We welcome your inputs.
