Hi Paula,
Your family is related to mine. My g-g-grsndmother, Hannah Monks had an older brother John who was born April 17, 1820 in England, and died July 27, 1877 in Belleville, Michigan. John moved to Chatham, Ontario, Canada, and his second wife was Elizabeth Ibberson, born June 26, 1836 in England, died April 8, 1903 in Belleville.
John's son was John George, b. 1843 in Albany, NY, d. April 8, 1901 in Saginaw, Michigan. John George's first wife was Sarah Stanfield, b. circa 1846 in England, daughter of William Stanfield and Hannah Monks. Sarah and John George fell in love, but the marriage was opposed by their families, since they were first cousins. They eloped, and settled in Bay, Michigan. They had five children: Henrietta, b. July 1870 in Bay; George Wellington, b. Oct. 19, 1874 in Bay, married Alvira Rebecca Phelps, d. June 5, 1924; Martha Hortense, b. Jan. 22, 1878, died Dec. 2, 1948; John William, b. May 9, 1885, d. April 13, 1919; and James D., b. Aug. 15, 1888.
Thomas Monks was the father of both Hannah and John, and he came from Tattershall, Lincolnshire, England. His wife's maiden name was Keith. William Stanfield's mother was Anne Pierpoint.
Nearly all of this information comes from Dick Taylor, who was kind enough to send it to me, and would like to share it with others of our lineage.
David
