Hi again, Sandra,
Re:-Name changes--My cousin Carmelo's name was changed to Charles, my dad Giuseppe's name was changed to Joseph, my brother Vincenzo's name was changed to James and my name Carmello[ with a double LL] is still Carmello today, 73 years later. Why me???? Not only is it foreign sounding, but it sounds feminine. I don't know how many times I've been made fun of or have people look at me with a quizzical smile on their face, but I made it, even though I'm still self concious. Our family in St. Teresa were lemon farmers and one branch of our family manufactured lemon oil.
By concidence, my dad also died at 53!!
Our Australian cousins came to Australia directly from St. Teresa and not from the USA. They are in the construction business.
Re:-History of Sicily--Over the centuries, Sicily has been invaded and sometimes conquered by the Phoenicians, Arabs, Greeks, Romans, and the Norsemen. For the most part the Sicilians would just go up into the hills and wait until the invaders decided to leave.
The Greeks were the most persistent and their structures dot most of the Sicilian landscape and probably had the most to do with populating Sicily. But the Norsemen also were participators. One of my uncles from St. Teresa was blue eyed, and some of my children and grandchildren are blond and blue eyed. My parents were born and raised in St. Teresa and I had blond hair until the age of three. I don't have blond hair any more; in fact I don't have any hair anymore!!! But I still have The name "CARMELLO".
Re:-The meaning of the name MOSCHELLA--There's no doubt that it means "Little Fly". If it bothers you that much, do what my daughter did when she had an assignment in the first grade to find out from her parents, what the meaning of her last name was. We, being truthful parents, told her that the meaning was "Little Fly". Afraid of being embarassed, she told them that it meant "Little Flower". So, you see, you can tell your non-Italian freinds that it means whatever you want it to mean!!!
But, I still don't know how I got stuck with that name "CARMELLO"!!!!!
Mel
