Katherine & Mossburg(h) researchers;

In 1977, I rec'd a letter from a Mosburgh cousin of mine, Wilma Ritter. In that letter, she told me that her elderly Aunt had given a sugar b owl to her in 1952. Her Aunt had written, on a slip of paper, the path of descent of that sugar bowl as follows: Selby > Harrison > Mosburgh >Reeves > Delong.

I've recently found some references, in the Selby fam genforum, to a couple of lines of the Selby family from MD to Belmont Co, OH, that I've gathered info about over these past 25+ years. The line of John Wesley Selby > Thomas Selby Jr & Sarah Benson > Thomas Selby Sr & Rebecca Groome, eventually leads back to the same origins as the James Selby > (Wm) Magruder Selby & Agnes Hodgkinson/Hoskinson > William Wilson Selby & Elizabeth (???) line of Prince Georges Co, MD.

The following is some of what I've found of my possible Harrison - Selby connection(s):

Me > my mother, Thelma Mae "Kay" (Heitsman/Hitsman) Lawson > her parents (1st cousins), Vern Theodore Heitsman/Hitsman & Mary Elizabeth "Mae" Mosburg > Vern's mother, Mary Elizabeth "Lizzie" (Mosburgh) Heitsman & Mae's father, Harrison Alexander Mosburg > ch of Mary Elizabeth Shafer & Christian Mosburgh Jr > Christian Mosburgh Sr & Jane/Janice Harrison.

Mrs Ritter's ancestor, Susanna (Mosburgh) Reeves, was born Aug 9 1806 in Frederick Co, MD to Christian Mosburgh Sr & Jane/Janice Harrison, who were marr. in Frederick Co, MD on Sep 16 1805. In the early 1980's, I found the christening records of Christian, and some of his siblings, in The Grace Evangelical & The Frederick Evangelical Luthern Churches of Frederciktown, Frederick Co, MD.

I have not yet found any chr rec of Jane/Janice Harrison, or for her known sibs. Therefore, I have no proof, at this time, of who her parents were. Mrs Ritter & I had reached the logical conclusion that Jane/Janice's mother was a Selby, and that may still be true. Just recently though, I have found additional info that points to the possiblity that the first link in the path of that sugar bowl was from Jane/Janice's sister, Sarah (Harrison) Selby [mentioned by name in the will of their sister, Elizabeth (Harrison) Oxley, as was their mother, (not named); their neice, Susanna Harrison; their sister, Polly (Mary Harrison) Karr; Jane/Janice (Harrison) Mosburgh & her dau, Susanna Mosburgh]

Some of my notes & early records of the HARRISON - Selby & related fams of MD & OH:

PRINCE GEORGES CO, MD:

As already mentioned above, Thomas Selby Sr marr. Rebecca Groome. Bro of Thos Sr, John Selby marr. Sarah Groome, sis of Rebecca. In his will, dated Feb 18 1763, probated Mar 26 1767 in Prince Georges Co, MD, were mentioned; wf-Sarah, eldest son- Kenelm Groome Selby, son- John Smith Selby, & dau- Henrietta Selby. Wittnesses: JOHN HARRISON, Henry Brooke, Martha Anne.

Mar 19 1775 - WM HARRISON marr. Elizabeth (???) Hall, a widow, Frederick Evangelical Lutheran Church.

[Elizabeth was evidently the mother of Eliazbeth Hall (Mrs David Barnes) & of NANCY HARRISON (Mrs James Barnes) who were early settlers of Barnesville, Belmont Co, OH. (There was apparently some suggestion among the desc's of Nancy, that she was a "cousin" of the two Presidents Harrison). Eliz. (???) Hall was possibly also the mother of Vachel Hall, an early minister of Belmont Co, OH]

1776-1782 Apparently, there were several HARRISON'S - BENJ, JOSEPH (JOSIAS?), KINSEY & WM, who served in Rev War from Frdk Co, MD, although the only Harrison listed in the, apparently incomplete, 1776 Census of MD [in Frdk Co] was PRISCILLA HARRISON 23 yrs of age.

Nov 19 1778 - WM HARRISON marr. Mary Davis, (a widow?), Frederick Evangelical Lutheran Church. [Same WM HARRISON as above, who md Eliz. Hall?]

[Records of Grace & Frederick Evangelical Churches include records of Mosburgh, Harrison, Hall, Davis & Selby fams. As no chr recs have been found in Frdk Co, MD for Jane/Janice Harrison & known sibs, we must consider the possibility that the same, or another, WM HARRISON may have married a SELBY during this same time period. So far, I have also not found a marr. rec for SARAH (HARRISON) SELBY, wf of THOS]

Jul 17 1779 - JOHN HARRISON marr. Betty Clann

[Aug 1 1779 - FRANCIS SCOTT KEY (author of "The Star Spangled Banner") was born to Lt. John Ross Key & Anne Pheobe Penn Dagworthy Charton, dau of Arthur Charlton & ELEANOR HARRISON of Frederick Co, MD. The only approriate aged birth/chr rec I've found, that would fit this Eleanor, is: ELIANOR HARRISON b Aug 17 1723 So River, Anne Arundel Co, MD to JOHN HARRISON & ELIZABETH (???). Also found b/chr recs for two other ch b to a John & Elizabeth Harrison of that time period & place: ELIZABETH HARRISON b Aug 24 1727 So River - chr Aug 24 1727 All Hallows Parish, AA Co, MD & LANCELOTT HARRISON b Nov 5 1729 So River]

Sep 1 1779 - RICHARD HARRISON deed to Daniel Dulaney

Nov 5 1779 - THOS HARRISON deed from Elias Cooperider

[1779-1786 Should be chr recs for MARY "POLLY" (HARRISON) KARR/CARR, SARAH (HARRISON) SELBY, JANE/JANICE (HARRISON) MOSBURGH (& WM HARRISON?) in Frdk Co, MD, where, on Feb 26 1784 - (Nancy?) Ann SELBY marr. Nathan MUSGROVE]

[There was a Samuel MUSGROVE listed in the 1830 FC of Belmont Co, OH, and he is the only MUSGROVE that I've found in that part of OH in the early settlement days. Apparently, this Sam'l marr. (1) Mary Parish & (2) Mary Dillon. Christian Mosburgh Jr & Mary Eliz. Shafer named a son George Dillon Mosburgh, but his name could have came from either the Mosburgh - Harrison or the Shafer - Varner side of the family]

Mar 21 1786 - JOHN HARRISON deed to James Smith

Apr 5 1786 - JOHN HARRISON deed to Thos Gaunt

Oct 12 1786 - JOHN HARRISON deed to Thos Gaunt

[I have not found any JOHN HARRISON listed in Frdk Co, MD census of 1790 or 1800, but there was a CATHERINE HARRISON listed there as head of household in 1790. I have found no proven record of the maiden name of this Catherine, or of her husb's first name, but there was evidently a CATHERINE (CONTEE) HARRISON (MRS JOHN), who may have been living in Frdk Co, MD during this time period]

[I will post more info about this possible Harrison - Contee - Hanson connection, later, but Catherine's sister, Jane Contee, marr. John Hanson & they removed to Frdk Co, MD where he enrolled in militia in 1775, served as a delagate to the Continental Congress & was elected as its President in 1782, which led to him being spoken of as the first President of the United States. This same Hanson family of MD, claims that the two Presidents Harrison descended from these Maryland Hansons]

Nov 25 1786 - THOS HARRISON deed to Adam Fisher

Jun 21 1787 - NATHAN HARRISON marr. Mary Baden

Oct 15 1787 - THOS HARRISON deed to Adam Carn [I just recently, in the last few months, found the will of Eliz. Oxley posted in the Oxley fam genforum. After a quick initial search for Kron(e)/Cron(e), and for Karn(e)(s)/Carn(e)(s) possibilites, I rec'd a copy of the original will, about a month ago. I was quickly able to gather info on Karr/Carr fam, as there were several posts by desc's in various websites. Polly's last name did not readily appear to be Karr, but that is the marriage rec that matched search of FamilySearch for marr. of Mary Harrison with last name of spouse as Karr. Rest fell into place so quickly, thanks to those many posts]

Apr 11 1789 - THOS HARRISON deed to Abihu Lemaster

[Before I get to 1790 Census, in my opinion, there were more than one Benj, Wm & John Harrison's in Frdk Co, MD, from 1761 to 1789, and several Harrison families coming from different Co.s of MD during that time frame. I would deeply appreciate any assistance in finding the various relationships, if any, of the several Harrison individuals & families of that area & of that time period, esp the names of those wives, mentioned by name, in the above deeds (I have not yet ordered & read all of them).

Also, about 1790, several members of another Harrison family, who were Quakers, moved into Frdk Co, MD from NJ, and from there to same Jefferson/Belmont &/or surrounding Co.s, OH (esp. Columbiana & Harrison Co.s), as my Harrison related families. Some of this fam were apparently listed as Harrison in the 1790 FC of Frdk Co, MD, while a Benj & Wm were listed as Harrisson (prob same Benj was listed twice, under both spellings). From this time, 1790, I'll only list info about my supposed Harrison family, as I still lack any proof of names of parents of Jane/Janice & her sibs]

1790 FC of Frdk Co, MD: p71; HARRISSON, WM - 1 m. 16+, 1 m. 16- & 5 f.s

FEB 22 1798 - MARY HARRISON md Walter KARR

Oxley, Polly Karr, Sarah Selby, Jane/Janice Mosburgh & prob a Wm Jr?)

1800 FC of Frdk Co MD: p131 Buckeystown KEAR, WALTER - 1 m. 16-26 (26 - Walter Karr) & 1 f. 16-26 (20 - "Polly" Mary Karr, nee Harrison)

MAY 30 1805 - WM HARRISON (Jr/Sr?, prob Jr) marr. Mary MUSGROVE [This is poss the parents of Susanna Harrison, named as neice of Eliz. Oxley, in Eliz.'s will. I've not yet found any further rec of this couple or of any ch]

[1808? - Mary b to Christian & Jane/Janice MOSSBURG. Other ch of this couple, b in OH, were: Daniel abt 1812, Wm 1816, Geo "Washington" 1819, Henry J 1821, Christian Jr 1823, John A and Sarah J 1829 & Lydia 1832]

[1800-1810 (MD/OH) - SARAH HARRISON marr. Thomas SELBY when/where?]

JEFFERSON CO, OH

[Jun 9 1808 - WM H. SELBY (relationship to Thos, husb of Sarah [Harrison] Selby, presently unk) deed from Enoch Harris

[1809 OH - Wm b to Thos & Sarah SELBY [marr. (1) Nov 29 1832 Belmont Co, OH to Mariah Hatcher & (2) Apr 3 1836 Belmont Co, OH to Sarah Davis, dau of Moses Davis & Ann Willits. Listed in 1840-60 FC's of Somerset Tp, Belmont Co, OH & 1880 FC there w/grdau]

JUN 19 1809 - WM HARRISON (Jr/Sr?) deed to Abel Loyd for same Lot 86 in Mt. Pleasant. [I've not found any further record of this Wm Harrison in Jeff. Co, OH, although there was a Wm Harrison (wf- Marg't Jordan) from York Co, VA to Jeff. Co, OH, who had a rather large family there]

[1809 NY - Hamilton J b to Walter & Polly Karr/Carr. 1810 FC of Romulus Tp, Seneca Co, NY: p 146; CARR, Walter 1 m. under 10 (Hamilton J 1 ?), 1 m. 26-45 (Walter 36 ?) & 1 f. 26-45 (Polly 30 ?). Also on same p was Carr, Elijah 20010-11100 This could be the same Elijah Carr as the one marr. 1837 Athens Co, OH, or at least of the same Carr fam. Hamilton J marr. (1) Jan 10 1831 Belmont Co, OH to Rebecca Connaway & (2) Oct 6 1859 Scioto Co, OH to Zear Lucus. Listed in 1840, 1850, 1860 & 1880 FC's of Athens Co, OH, Hamilton J was a Free Will Baptist Minister there]

[Unfortunately, there is no 1810 FC of OH, athough there are early tax & deed recs, and a "reconstructed" 1810 OH census from just some of those early recs. A few members of my Harrison related fams were evidently residents of neighboring Belmont Co, OH in the early 1810's, so the next few entries will be somewhat out of order, chronilogically]

1812 - Elizabeth b to Thos & Sarah SELBY [prob d 1850's. Listed as an invalid in home of her bro, Joseph, in 1850 FC of Belmont Co, OH, but not as an heir in mother's will, dated Aug 11 1859 & probated Dec 19 1862]

1818 - Joseph b to Thos & Sarah SELBY [marr. (1) Dec 6 1843 Belmont Co, OH to Faraby (Phariba) Davis, dau of Moses Davis & Ann Willits; (2) Ruth (Morris) Hunt, widow of Jos/Jas W Hunt. Listed as h of h in 1840 FC of Somerset Tp, Belmont Co, OH, w/sis & mother, and in the 1850 &1860 FC's of same place]

SEP 1819 Term of Jeff. Co, OH court awarded letters of admin. to Christian Mossburgh & Sarah (Harrison) Selby on the estate of Thomas Selby, late of Jeff. Co, OH, dec'd. Inv. included only three notes due from; Brice Murphy (prob son of James M Murphy & Henrietta Selby, of presantly unk relationship to Thos Selby, dec'd); Christian Mosburg (bro-in-law to Thos Selby's widow, Sarah; & Mary Berry (whom I believe was related somehow to Thos or to Sarah [Harrison] Selby. After the death of his father, Christian Mossburg Jr admin, sold Mossburg land to Jacob Berry [1867 Belmont Co, OH witt: Wm Mossburg] then moved to IA & then to KS, where he d 1898). FINAL NOTES & QUESTION:

I appreciate all posts by decs's of the Oxley family, and of Walter & Polly (Harrison) Carr, in various websites. Unfortuately, aside from a few queries from probable Mossburgh desc's, who have the same info I've had since the late 1970's, I've not found much posted by desc's of Christian & Jane/Janice (Harrison) Mossburg, or any by desc's of Thos & Sarah (Harrison) Selby. If I've found any posted by desc's of the parents of Susanna Harrison, neice of Eliz.Oxley, I would prob not even have recognized them.

Just because this post by me is full of new info to you & me, please do not think that means I need no help. Quite the contrary, we do not know the name of the brother, or of either parent, of Eliz., Polly, Sarah & Jane/Janice. Since we can now reasonably assume, by 1850 census, if correct, that Polly, Sarah & Jane/Janice were b in MD in late 1770's/early 1780's, it should be a very logical assumption that the Wm Harrison listed in the1790 census of Frdk Co, MD (where Polly & Jane/Jancie were marr.) is their father (esp. since all 5 ch fit agewise). If this Wm Harrison & family are mine/ours, it is the 1st known record of any of them, in Frdk Co, MD. We cannot assume this Wm is the same as any of the Wm Harrison's listed in any of the earlier recs of Frdk Co, MD, or that any of the ch were b in Frdk Co, just because they were marr. there &/or their spouse(s) were born/from there.

It would be rather natural to also assume that, since desc's of Wm Harrison & Mrs Elizabeth Hall settled in Belmont Co, OH, that the Wm Harrison who marr. Mrs Eliz. Hall (& poss Mary Davis) was the Wm Harrison listed in that 1790 FC of Frdk Co, MD. As poss as that may be, Eliz. Oxley, according to 1830 FC of Belmont Co, OH, was 60-70 (b 1760-70) & her mother, assuming she was the f. 80-90 living with Eliz., was b 1740-50. As there were 2 or 3 Wm Harrison's living in Frdk Co, MD from 1760 to 1790, I do not believe we can assume anything at this point. We decs's of this Harrison family that was identifed by relationship in Eliz. Oxley's will, all need help, from anyone out there with additional info, and each other, to find our Harrison "roots" in MD.

I have one question, for the sake of curiousity & for further research clues, directly to desc's of Walter & Polly (Harrison) Karr/Carr. Most of you posted "Polly" Mary's maiden name as Harrison, apparently without knowing when/where she marr Walter Karr/Carr. What document or family record gave her maiden name as Harrison?

Click on my name for posting history, and/or go to Vancleave fam genforum #503 for outline of my children's ancestors. Thanks in advance for any additional info,
