Darn, somehow I had missed that William and Miner/Minor. Wonder how. That means the William Naugle whose military papers I just pulled is this William.

Mine is William H. and I think in 1850 he appears as the William Nagle/Nogle, 19, in Pittston as a laborer living in the household of John Thomas. This is based on his age in later census records. He is 29 in 1860, 41 in 1870 and 50 in 1880. He uses the H. in 1880 and in the Wilkes-Barre directories for 1889, 1890 and 1891.

Since William Nagle, the apparent brother of Minor, is 30 at the time of enlistment in April 1864, it most likely this is the William in the 187th. I'm curious why you call him William F--the census record has no initial. George P. was apparently another son from this household. Bradsby says he was born 12 Sep 1827 to Philip and Rosanne (Dreisbach) Naugle and served in Company C of the 187th.

Bradsby says George P was born in Nescopeck, but in the profile of Chauncey Naugle, he says that Minor was born in Northumberland Co. William's enlistment papers say he was born in Luzerne, while his Company Muster and Descriptive Roll says he was born in "Lehigh, Pa"--it doesn't specify Lehigh Township or Lehigh County. None of this helps me with my William H. except to suggest the Civil War records are not his. .

Any ideas about my William, born abt 1830, died 1891, probably William Henry?

Yes, I show Mary Ann Naugle married Josiah Ruggles. Their daughter Sarah Anne married William Henry. I think the ancestry of Mary Ann is Frederick, John George, Frederick Wilhelm.
