Royal Navy POWs of the French

I have a Scottish ancestor Henry Rae who emigrated to Australia in 1822 and sought a land grant from the colonial government, informing them that he had served in the Royal Navy against the French under an Admiral Leeming (?)and been a prisoner of the French for 7 and a half years. No mention of his ship. Working back from 1815 I am guessing he was captured in an engagement in 1807/8. Can anyone help me or give me some pointers on where to look next?
