To all Lumleys, specially in New Zealand.
Hi,
My name is Bernard Reid. I am a professional magician and for the past 15 years or so I have been working on a history of magic in New Zealand which in the early days was rich and colorful. The second magician to tour and perform extensively in New Zealand (1858-1860) was “Wizard Lumley”. His real name was George Lumley and through extensive research I have gathered a lot of information about him but there are still some gaps and questions that need answering and I am hoping that there are some Lumley family members who may have the answers.
As his name does not appear on the early electoral rolls of New Zealand I am working on the supposition that he was an immigrant or was passing through as a transient entertainer. Please correct me if I am wrong, but I am also working on the supposition that this was the same George Lumley that passed away in New Zealand on Dec 26th 1867 at age 41 and is buried there. He certainly lived a very “colorful” life. If he passed away in 1867 he must have been born in 1826 but I do not have a birthdate or location. Can anyone help? Highly unlikely, but I also wonder if any family member has a picture of him. Any information would be most helpful.
