Hi Wendy,
cant find anything for his death records, but found a marriage and a divorce for christchurch area which may be connected.perhaps after the divorce he disappeared overseas?
Marriage for an Albert HULME ,year 1894 spouse Ocean Annie BARSON. and divorce records available from Archives N Z see details at link below
