Oh boy - you are going to think I am soooo dense! lol I'm sorry - I think you are right about that Thomas who arrived in 1902 being our TWB...He was born in 1880 so he must have gone there first before going to Samoa. Now - with the Romona...I didn't even think about that being short for Mona...thanks for that too! However, Mona was my mother's mom...my gramma and she was with us until 1979. She was born on May 23, 1906. I have a baptism certificate showing this however, I have a wonderful lady in Liverpool who has been helping me to find out where my gramma lived while she was in England - and she went to the library in Liverpool and found a baptism record as well - but the one she found shows Mona's birthdate as June 12, 1905.?? I don't know if that was an error in that record as we have always celebrated her birthday May 23rd and - the paper Baptism certificate I have shows May 23, 1906 as her birthday. I believe that when TWB married Fati - they had a daughter they named Romona as well. A lady sent me a link to "Claims of American Citizens in Samoa" - and this article is to do with Thomas Wilkinson Brighouse and a William Pettibone. There were actually 2 articles but I had only seen the first one where William P was claiming for damages and Thomas and Mona's names were mentioned as well. It had stated that it was on record that William P was lost at sea and in his absence - Thomas married his wife (but there was no mention of her name in that first article) - and that there was a child by that marriage...Mona Brighouse who was now living in England with her aunt. The second article shows statements made by Thomas to the courts. (14 William R. Pettibone) Thomas states that he is appearing on behalf of his daughter, Mona Brighouse and that she is the daughter of the former Mrs. Pettibone. When Thomas was asked if he married Mrs. Pettibone - he said that he had...in 1895. Thomas said that he had left a record of that marriage with the courts in Apia, Samoa and he would produce it later. Thomas is then asked if he was aware of the death of William R Pettibone...he said he wasn't. Thomas states that he has lived in Samoa for five years...he is the natural guardian appointed for his daughter Mona and that Mona is now staying with his mother Emma in England. In answer to "Do you know if Mr. Pettibone's estate has ever been administered in any court?" - Thomas replied - no. This record then states that Mrs. Pettibone (supposedly married to Thomas) died September 25, 1908 in Apia, Samoa. (this goes against what we have always been told - that gramma's mother died giving birth to her). The courts asked if she had a will - Thomas said - no. Her first name was Marie. That is all that was said. I am wondering if Thomas learned that William Pettibone had died and - because maybe he thought Marie Pettibone was entitled to part of his estate but was dead as well - that maybe he thought he could get money for Mona from William's estate as she was Marie's daughter. Just a thought. In the first record "Claims of American citizens in Apia, Samoa" (if you want to look it up) #14 - William R. Pettibone - 2 records...it states that William was considered to be lost at sea...Thomas married his wife...then William reappeared and was making a claim for damages to his property. I think Thomas may have been a part of this as he was expected to be a witness...I don't know for sure - you would have to read it. I am out of work right now and just learned my Dad has Lou Gehrigs...so I don't have much money but I will check into that record for George to see what it will cost to obtain his death certificate. Thanks again for your help Graham - and for making me realize that there are other ways of looking at some of these records...especially - to notice dates! lol Take care Dianne Notify Administrator about this message?
