There were 2 William Nortons age 8 listed in Cobb Co., Ga. census in 1850. One was listed in the household of Miles V. Norton and the other in the household of Eli C. Norton. Eli C was the son of Miles V. and they were listed next door to each other in 1850. In 1860 Paulding Co., Ga., Eli C & Miles V were again listed next door to each other. William age 18 was listed in Eli C's household but no William age 18 was listed in Miles V's household. I believe that the 2 Williams listed in 1850 may have been the same person and that he was the son of Eli C and the grandson of Miles V.

I have no record of the William age 18 listed in Eli C's household in 1860 after 1860. In either 1850 or 1860, William was listed as William N.

Have you been able to pull military papers on your William G. Sometimes it will give county of birth or county of enlistment. That would might help narrow down your search.
