Hi, Gang - I was going through my boxes of genealogy and ran across and obit from 1847. I have no idea why I have it, and I have no idea who the lady is exactly. (I haven't checked the Census records yet.) Anyway, it is about Lucy Norton, wife of Rev. Henry Norton. She died at her home on Chestnut Ridge, on 10 Apr 1847, in her 54th year. She was born in Massachusetts, so that would have been in abt 1793. As a child she removed to "the Western part of the State, where she married and removed to the town of Lockport"...."where she lived until the time of her decease. I sort of assume we are talking about Lockport, New York, but is there a Lockport, Massachusetts? The obit is signed by George Wilson, Chestnut Ridge, Sept 3, 1847. Lucy left a proslavery M. E. Church in 1843 and united with the Wesleyan Methodist Church, "where she could exercise unrestrained all that sympathy for the crushed bondman which the religion and the Bible prompted." The obit is lengthy. I won't put it all here. There are several Methodist Churches in Lockport, New York. Anyone have any clue, what couple this obit refers to?
