Dropped Dead.-About 6 o'clock this morning, as one of the workmen of the Caledonia mine was passing along the railroad, between the Knickerbocker and Caledonia mines, he discovered the lifeless body of George Campbell, a miner at the Caledonia, lying face downward, in which position he had apparently fallen while going from his cabin to his work at the mine. Help was immediately summoned from the mine and the body carried to his cabin a short distance from the spot, and again, taken from there to the undertaker, where it now lies. No cause is assigned for the man's sudden death, he having worked his shift the day before in apparent health, but from the fact that the breast turned perfectly black a short time after the body was discovered, it is supposed that he died of heart disease. Mr. Campbell was 42 years old, and is spoken of as a steady, temperate, hard working man saving every dollor of his earnings to send to his wife and family, who reside near Bangor, in the State of Maine. A Coroner's Jury has been summoned, and an inquest will be held day after to-morrow, when, if futher facts are elicited, the public shall have the benefit of them.
My note: mining was hard in this area. Temps reached over 120 degrees and the miners had to cool off every 20 or so minutes with water and ice. All this for about 4.00 a day. So it could be the heart problem resulted from working conditions.
