JOHN O'BRIEN

I think this is a lost cause but, I keep trying to find out about my grandfather, John O'brien, who was born in Boston, Massachusettes between 1888 and 1998. All I know about his childhood is his parents came here in the mid 1800's from Ireland. They had a lot of children, however, both passed away and the children were sent to orphanages. He met Rose Bischoff sometime after 1910, in New York City. They married and had my mother, along with 7 other children. Their names were Catherine, Mary, Alice, Martha, John, Adelaide, Madeline and Eleanor.

I was able to find them in the 1920 & 1930 census. The odd thing was my grandfather gave different ages for himself and I could not pinpoint his age. I have searched the census for orphaned children. I found a record in the 1900 census taken at St. Mary's orphanage in Mass. It struck me because the O'Brien children's names were Mary & Catherine twins both aged 12. Henry aged 10, John aged 8 and Joseph aged 6. Mary & Catherine are the first names of my two oldest aunts.

I remember my mother telling me that my grandfather's parents perished in a fire.

Is there any way I can research obituaries, orphanage records, etc., to try and find out more information. I have researched his death record and the one I find is that he was born in 1898.

Please help if you can.

Thank you,

Carolyn Fennell
