Hi Greg: I am Diane Shafer and I think the papers you looked at were my study of my grandfather's family, Hammer Edgar Thompson. I miss Mary O'Bryant so much and wish I could have shared my new information with her. Hope this helps other O'Bryant researchers. For the longest time I thought that Duncan O'Bryant was the father of Wilson, our ancestor. However, since my move to Georgia (note my new email address) I have done more research in Habersham County, Georgia and Pendleton District, South Carolina. I now believe that Wilson was the brother of Duncan O'Bryant, and probably the brother of a Lewis O'Bryant. I believe they were all the sons of a John O'Bryant/Bryant/Bryan/O'Bryan. They all appear on the 1820 Habersham County, Georgia census living close together. Then in 1830 Duncan is the minister of the Yellow Creek Baptist Church in Murrayville, Georgia and has a John and Janey Bryant living with him. Shortly after that Duncan goes to Oklahoma with the Cherokee and dies. In 1830, John and Janey are listed betwee 70 and 80. On the 1840 census in Georgia, a Baptist minister named Lewis W. Bryant has a couple living with him between 80 and 90 years of age. I now believe, but need to prove, that a John O'Bryan or Bryan, who was a trader/packman to the Cherokee from Pendleton District, South Carolina, had sons Duncan, Wilson, and Lewis. I think they all lived in Georgia until Wilson went to Illinois circa 1825 and Duncan to Arkansas and then Oklahoma. I think Lewis and John stayed in Georgia. There is a very strong chance that John was married to a full blood Cherokee. The names Duncan and Wilson were families that lived around the O'Bryants and were Baptists and Quakers. I believe that the O'Bryants either came with the Duncan settlement to South Carolina, or descended from a John Bryan who was a trader with the Cherokee from Charleston, South Carolina as far back as the early 1700's. Hope this helps. Diane Notify Administrator about this message?
