O'Bryant changed to Bryant?

Hello! My family has said for years that 'back in the day' there were so many O'Bryant's in the local area that the mail carrier forced some of them to drop the O' in order to make for better service. Now I'm not sure how accurate this story is...haha. But, if anyone has any ideas or explanations please let me know! It very well could be true since I am unable to find any relation past my Great-Grandfather, William Greenberry Bryant (spouse: Kate Redshaw) of Schuyler County, Illinois.
The Bryant's in my family are/were from Schuyler County, IL. and west central Illinois.
Thanks in advance for any help you may offer!

Cherie Bryant
