Gary,

The "courthouse fire" is the oldest excuse in the book from a town or county clerk who busy. However, since it may be true, try other routes. Published "Town Reports" which list births, marriages & deaths are common in New England. Baptismal records of local churches are another possible source. And if the family was still on Old Town in 1880, the Soundex index to the U.S. Census of that year should list them. Good luck.
