Hi Mary, Can you tell me where New Inn parish is in Tipperary as my O'Dea ancestors came from the parish of Aghaboe in Leix (Queen's Co) which is only 7 or 8 miles from the Tipperary border, and about the same distance from Kilkenny. In the Aghaboe parish register their surname is variously written as "Daa", "Day", "Dee", "Dea", and "Dey" among other spellings.
They were listed as "Day" on the ship's passenger list to Australia in 1868, but within 2 years their name was recorded as O'Day and then O'Dea. Although my direct ancestor in Ireland was Joseph, born in 1819, the son of Kyron Day and Mary Burke, most of the other christian names including Laurance, Margaret, John, Michael, James, Mary, Thomas, and Catherine appeared in the first generation born in Australia; which suggests the possibility that they were cousins or 2nd cousins of your Laurence O'Dea, if the parish of New Inn is anywhere near the border between Tipperary and Leix. This is a long shot I know, but worth a query. Regards, Brian.
