Mildred F. Bisch was born on October 27, 1911, in Slayton, Minnesota to John and Mary Steiner O’Donnell. She grew up on the family farm southeast of Slayton. Mildred attended St. Gabriel’s School. On May 12, 1931 she and Lester Like were married at St. Rose of Lima Church in Avoca, Minnesota. Following their marriage they farmed in the Slayton area for a few years. In 1931 they moved to Slayton. In 1954, they moved to Heron Lake, Minnesota and ran the Corner Café. Lester passed away in 1957. Mildred continued running the café and later worked at the Heron Lake Drug Store. On August 12, 1964, she and Robert Bisch were married in Windom, Minnesota. They made their home in the Heron Lake area. They retired in 1986 and moved to Arizona and later to Grand Junction, Co. Robert passed away in 1997 and Mildred returned to Slayton. In 2004, Mildred entered the Golden Living Center-Slayton. In March 2008, Mildred moved to Our House Hospice Home in Slayton and passed away there on May 8, 2008. at the age of 96. Mildred was a member of St. Ann’s Church in Slayton. She enjoyed spending time with family, sewing and traveling.
Survivors include her three children and their spouses: Virginia and Norton Johnson, Balaton, MN; Mary and Ken Christopherson, Whitewater, CO; and Chuck and Sandi Like, Slayton, MN; 11 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren, 23 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands Lester Like; and Robert Bisch; one granddaughter Leslie Like; six brothers and two sisters.
Funeral services were held at St. Ann’s Church in Slayton, MN on Monday, May 12, 2008, at 10:30 a.m. with Fr. Patrick Arens officiating. The organist was Judy Andrews. The song leader was Lavina Fox. The pallbearers were Jon Christopherson, Matthew Like, Michael Johnson. Fran Breiter, Nort Johnson, and Bill Bryan. Interment is at St. Ann's Cemetery, Slayton, MN.
