I am really grateful to you for your interest in my post. As you will see from my follow-up post to Tasha Hepper in this forum on 23rd June, things weren't what they seemed to be when I posted my dad's original details. In fact, nothing he told of his early life proved to be in accord with the truth. His family must have been Irish in origin, but my dad was born in Poona, India. His parents and grandparents were all born in British India. However, we believe he, and possibly his mother, did emigrate to Ireland in or shortly after 1914, following the premature death of his dad, Henry Michael Dwyer (or O'Dwyer, for the two surnames seem interchangeable). We believe they were given lodging on the estate of a prosperous landowning family, maybe in Co. West Meath, called Gilpin, who were distant relatives of the O'Dwyers. My godfather was one Geoffrey Richard Purcell Gilpin, son of the family and of roughly the same age as my dad, and who is mentioned in http://www.thepeerage.com/p542.htm.
As you will see, there is no connection with Bristol other than in my father's rich imagination. However, Alleyn Becher were his forenames, and I would be most interested to hear from you any possible connection with either the Alleyn or the Becher families.
Following a certain amount of detailed genealogical investigation in London and elsewhere, and having determined something closer to the truth about Alleyn Becher's early years, I wrote a report to the family on the entire strange affair, which among other things explains how Clifton College and Bristol became part of my father's imaginary identity. I would be delighted to send you it in .pdf format, but the problem is that I don't think I can do it through this forum.
