Okay, I now understand all you wrote. Very interesting. And I located your wonderful website. You did mention it, but previously I had gotten a notice of a broken link.

So one wants Charles Olson or Olsen, or Carl or Karl Olson, or similar, born June 1835 to Ole somebody, perhaps in Oslo, or in Christiansand (Vest-Agder), or a similar-sounding place, and he's shipping out, possibly from Oslo, on a ship bound for America, in about 1863. One wants a list of ships out of Christiania around about that time and their crews.

I did search Ancestry.com for a ship's manifest listing him - didn't find it. I checked at the link below and didn't find him:

...and one could go on. But I can now see that, given all your careful research, you have likely tried all the same techniques that would occur to me - and more.
