Charles Pace
Charles Ernest Pace SUFFOLK - Charles Ernest "Chuck" Pace, 60, died peacefully March 11, 2008, surrounded by his loving wife and family following a yearlong battle with cancer. A Portsmouth native, Chuck was the son of the late Joseph Charles and Hortense Crawford Pace. Chuck graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School and was a proud alumnus of East Carolina University. He was an active fan of Pirate's sports activities and carried the popular moniker of "Greybeard" among fellow active ECU alumni. He was a member of St. Paul's Catholic Church of Portsmouth. Chuck loved the game of golf and spent much of his free time with his many golfing friends and family at area links, most recently as a member of the Riverfront Golf Club. Following graduation from ECU in 1969, Chuck proudly served our country in the U.S. Army which included a tour stationed at Quan Tri Province in Vietnam. Chuck worked for 36 years at the Portsmouth Dept. of Juvenile Justice as a counselor for troubled youth. Chuck's compassion towards his clients was best expressed by the parents of one youth. In a handwritten letter the concerned parent wrote: "...Recently my son was released from probation and the charges were dismissed. His probation counselor was Mr. Charles Pace. All too often, we are quick to complain about city officials are slow to praise a job well done. Mr. Pace was both pleasant and professional in handling my son's case. I believe he had a real positive impact. For his help, I wish to both praise and thank Mr. Pace." Chuck leaves many family members and friends who he loved and who loved him. He is survived by his wife, Linda Watson Pace; two stepdaughters, Robin and husband Kevin Martin of Houston, Texas, Lisa and husband Kendall Rump of Indianapolis, Ind.; and one stepson, Frank B.
