> Harrison L. Packard is described as having > "Packard ID# S 341 41113" What does this mean? The ID numbers used by the Packard and Allied Families Association are a variant of the Scudder system of numbering. The "S" indicates that the earliest American ancestor was Samuel (who came on the Diligent in 1638). Successive characters indicate successive generations, with males represented by numerals assigned in birth order, and females by lower case letters assigned in birth order. In this case the lineage as far as I have it in my database is Samuel^1, Zaccheus^2, Solomon^3, Jacob^4, Oliver^5. Oliver had a son Jacob, but my data on Oliver's family is probably incomplete, and I do not have a marriage or children for Jacob. For details of the Packard numbering system see Karle S. Packard, "A System for Unique Identification Numbers in Family History" (Packard's Progress, 15 [Aug., 1990]:53-54). Dale H. Cook; Member, NEHGS and MA Society of Mayflower Descendants; Plymouth Co.
