Hello, Roy:
My mother has an interesting story about her father's background. His name was John Packwood Patey. The story goes that he was reared in the family of Packwoods, who were hoteliers in Bendigo, Australia, in the late 1800s, and so took Packwood as his middle name. When we were in Australia in 1997, we visited Bendigo and Ballarat -- the "gold" cities -- and confirmed much of this family history passed down to my mother. If you are looking for Packwoods today, I would advise you to check in the Bendigo and Ballarat region.
John Packwood Patey moved to Seaford, on the ocean outside Melbourne, and married a widow, Nellie Riley Gunn. They operated a guesthouse "Fernlea" which was popular with families from the Melbourne area for many years. It's a beautiful area of the coast, and I treasure the memories handed down by my mother of her years at "Fernlea."
Thanks, Liz.
