The IGI shows Thomas Pallister's marriage to Jane Ferry in Gateshead on 19 Oct 1872. The only marriage to a John around 1846 that I have, from the GRO, is John Pallister who married in the Auckland area in the September quarter.
I have 3 Thomas Pallister births from the GRO in 1850:
1. Pallister, Weardale, March qr
2. Pallester, Chester le St, June qr
3. Pallister, Stockton, June qr

The IGI shows a John Pallister bapt to Thomas Pallister/Sarah Dodds 28 April 1822 at Auckland St Andrew. I don't know if this is the right one.

Strangely, I can't find any of these people on the 1881 census, but I'll have a closer look offline.
