am looking specifically for "pettiford" or similar variations of that spelling, of the free african americans of illinois descent. even though the illinois census has a "slave" section, according to the illinois history, all african-americans were free. i am specifically trying to track the history of mayme pettiford, who was so pale, that others thought she was white. any information would be extremely helpful.
