I wish more Phipps descendants would be tested. I found immediate benefit, genealogically speaking, from my Y-DNA test. After reading about melungeons and Phippses, I was beginning to wonder if my Phipps line was really Phipps at all, but the Y-DNA clearly shows a preponderance of British Isles roots.

This is exciting stuff, as it appears to already be suggesting specific directions in research that a number of genealogists have been wrestling with for decades.

Apparently most labs test you by having you swab the inside of a cheek, then mailing in the swab. Instead, I gargled with some sort of substance, then spit it out into a container and mailed the liquid to the lab. (I was tested by Sorenson Molecular Genealogical Foundation, with results provided by GeneTree, rather than using Family Tree DNA.) I had a Y-DNA test done for my dad's side of the family, and an mtDNA test done for my mother's side. In both cases, I found that the DNA data appears to match the traditional genealogical research perfectly.

In my experience, the process is quick, easy, and private. I wish more people would do DNA testing so that we can eventually get a large pool of results to compare.
