This isn't my line, but I just now looked them up. I see them in the census in 1860 and 1880 in Magoffin Co., KY. (I assume you have that info.) In the 1860 census, there aren't that many Phippses in the county. There are four heads of household: Greenville, James, John, and Martin. Your James was about 31 then, Greenville was about 22, and Martin was about 24. John, however, is 58. This suggests the following birthdates: James - born about 1829 Kentucky Greenville - born about 1838 Kentucky Martin - born about 1836 Kentucky Greenville, James, and Martin were all born in Kentucky, while John, who is much older than the others, was born in Virginia. I figured it was highly probable that Greenville, James, and Martin were brothers, and that they were all sons of John. Then I looked at census records for John and found this to be correct. This John Phipps was born about 1802 in Virginia, and his wife Cynthia was born about 1804 in Kentucky. This John and Cynthia are the same John and Cynthia that appear earlier, in the 1850 census in Morgan County, Kentucky. There, among the children are listed - VOILA! - the following: James, born about 1829 Kentucky Greenville, listed as "Green," born about 1838 Kentucky Martin, sorry, not listed, but, hey! Pretty close! All of this suggests the following: John Phipps, born about 1802 VA Wife: Cynthia, born about 1804 KY Their children: James, born abt 1829 KY - YOUR ANCESTOR John, born abt 1834 KY Martin, born abt 1836 KY Greenville ("Green"), born abt 1838 KY Alicy(?), born abt 1839 KY Ludema/Ludenia, born abt 1843/1844 KY Winny/Winnie, born abt 1845/1846 KY (Ludema from the 1850 census appears as Ludenia in the 1860 census, and Winny in 1850 appears as Winnie in 1860.)
