I believe I've run into Phipps spelled as Phelps or Philps or something similar (and Philips or Phillips).
I've been called "Phelps" or "Phillips" numerous times.
Your line, as far as I know, isn't my line, but I've collected lots of data on lots of people named Phipps over the last 30 years or so. I used to publish a genealogical quarterly called the PHIPPS FAMILY JOURNAL and helped John Mullins and Duval Craven back in the '80s with their massive book on the Phipps families of NC and VA.
I descend from Samuel Phipps (1762-1854) of Ashe Co., NC and his wife Elizabeth ("Betty") Reeves (1762-1845), and their son Jesse Phipps (1788-1865) and his wife Jane ("Jennie") Spurlin. Then my line descends through their son Matthew Phipps (1810/11-1841) of Owen Co., IN, and his wife Mathursa (Mathursy) Toliver, then through their son John A. Phipps (1836-1900) and his third of four wives, Serena Elizabeth Condor. John and Serena were my great-grandparents.
