I just checked my census copies and it was definitely Schuyler Co Mo. 1850 census District 91 on 13th Sept Stephen Combs was living in House 337. Next to him in house 338 was Samuel(I think) Wright, Stephen married Cynthia Wright. Abel Friend was in house 360. In 1860 Abel was in Speedwell Twp and in 1870 he was in Miami Co Kansas, Osowatomie Co where I think he died. I.ve never found out for sure but he wasnt there in 1880 and I never found him anywhere else. Cinthia Combs was living with them in 1870, so I'm pretty sure Stephen and Cynthia are Nancy Combs parents. Abel was married before to Elizabeth Wallace and I have her death date at abt 1847, just guessing. I went back to Ill several years ago to where I grew up and also went to Carthage Ill where I found a little genealogy library. They had a newspaper clipping pertaining to Mrs Abel Friend who died of smallpox. It is a hilarious piece of writing and I'd sure like to know if it is true. According to a person living in the town, he believed she was a witch and that he killed her by drawing a figure on a shed door and then shooting it. He was married to her sister the piece said. One of these days I'm going to write the descendent of the Wallaces who sent me all their info and see what she has to say about it. Anyway Nancy was the same age when she married Abel as his oldest daughter. A lot of Friend researchers had her down as a daughter when they first began looking into the Friends. I'd be tickled silly if you could tell me more about those early days in Ill. Yes the Combs and Friend in the Black Hawk war are the same ones I'm asking about. There is a man named Ed Friend who I've corresponded with a lot and he is a descendent of the Friends. He said he and his Dad had a hard time locating Abels father because they were not looking for him in Ill..I was born in Ill and just reading about a lot of these little towns makes me homesick. I lived in Ill for 10 years, it will always be home to me. Anyway are you a descendent of Sarah E Fips ? Do you know anything else about the Combs, there were 3 boys and 1 girl in the 1850 census and in the 1840 census in Ill Stephen had 4 males and 3 females. If he(Stephen) is the Stephen who disappeared from KY?? he has an illustrious pedigree.
Thank you very much for answering my query, it has really made my day. Beverly Dale
