Biographical Sketch of Malachai Thomas Pickett (1834-1917)

Malachai Thomas Pickett (known as M. T., or Mack), was born July 28, 1834,
the third son of Malachai (Sr.) and Mary Pickett in Greenville County, SC,
however, Malachai, Sr. moved his family to Georgia between about 1834 and 1840,
settling before the latter year in western Cobb County, along what came to be
known Pickett's Mill Creek. In 1850, the census taker listed Malachai T. as the
last child of the family to be born in SC, but in subsequent censuses his
birthplace is invariably given as Georgia.

Between 1850 and 1860, Malachai, Sr. moved a few miles further west,
building up a relatively large farm along Pumpkin Vine Creek north of Dallas,
Paulding County, Georgia. M. T. moved with him, helping with the farm labor up
until the outbreak of the War Between the States. By that time, his three
brothers had married and established their own separate households, with his
oldest brother, Benjamin W., operating the grist mill on Pickett's Mill Creek.

On June 25, 1861, M. T. ("Mack") Pickett joined the "Cotton Guards" rifle
company being recruited at Big Shanty (now Kennesaw), Georgia. This company was
soon mustered into Confederate service as Company H, 19th Georgia Volunteer
Infantry Regiment, and Mack Pickett was appointed 2nd Lieutenant. The 19th
Georgia moved by train to Virginia, where it was assigned to Wade Hampton's
Brigade. In this organization it received its baptism of fire in an engagement
at Barhamsville, near Williamsburg, and then participated in heavy fighting at
the Battle of Seven Pines (Fair Oaks). When R. E. Lee reorganized the Army of
Northern Virginia in June, 1862, the 19th Georgia became a unit of J. J.
Archer's Brigade, A. P. Hill's Light Division, Stonewall Jackson's Corps, and
remained in this celebrated division through the remaining time of Lt.
Pickett's service. The 19th Georgia took part in an attack against murderous
Union fire at Gaines Mill and participated in the remaining operations known as
The Seven Days Campaign. In the following two months it fought at Cedar Creek,
Groveton, Second Manassas and Antietam in one of the most demanding series of
military actions in American history. During the following winter, Lt.
Pickett's resignation was accepted for reasons of physical disability, so he
was not present at his regiment's last action as a part of Lee's army, the
Battle of Fredericksburg. Returning to Paulding County, he apparently served as
an officer in the Georgia Home Guards.

At some time during the War, or in the immediate post-war period, M. T.
Pickett married Margaret Matilda Lewis, the daughter of George M. Lewis, a
farmer of eastern Paulding County. She came from a large family of three
brothers and nine sisters, she being the fifth child, born Feb. 1, 1846,
probably in Heard County, Georgia. her eldest brother, James S. Lewis, served
in Co. D, 7th Georgia Infantry, and was killed at the Battle of Spotsylvania in
1864.

For at least six years after the War, M. T. Pickett lived as a farmer in or
near Dallas, Georgia. his two eldest children, Iola and Benjamin F., were born
there before 1870. During the 1870s, he took his family west, first to Texas,
then to Arkansas, however, by 1879 he had returned to settle in Fulton County,
Georgia, along or near the Mason and Turner Ferry Road west of Atlanta, just
south of the 1864 battlefield of Ezra Church.

As the city of Atlanta rapidly expanded during the late 19th and early 20th
centuries, its western outskirts embraced the home and family of M. T. Pickett.
From 1888 he began to be listed in the Atlanta City Directory, and from that
year up to the turn of the century was indexed as a retail grocer; in addition
to a small farm, he operated a small store in the area where Mason and Turner
Ferry Road met West Hunter Street. Ultimately, his home was numbered as a
residence on West Hunter. Later, the family purchased a home on Highland Avenue
on the northeast side of Atlanta, where several members of the succeeding
generation of Pickett's lived for many years.

Malachi Thomas Pickett died Sept. 12, 1917, in Atlanta, and is buried in
Westview Cemetery. His wife Margaret died June 8, 1929, and is buried beside
him.
