My direct ancestor is Joshua QUANCE Sr, b in 1752 in (I believe) Batcombe Somersetshire England. The facts we know concern his service in the American Revolution (from Bridgewater MA) and his m to Sylvia COLE (da of Ebenezer and Hannah BRYANT COLE of Kingston MA) probably in Chesterfield MA. By 1784,when their first child, Joshua, was born , the couple was in Chesterfield with a good part of Sylvia's family. Joshua and Sylvia had 9 children in the next 14 years, Joshua, Rachell, Ebenezer, Isaac, Thomas (my line), King Henry, Hannah, Elizabeth/Betsey, and James who was b 1797. Joshua is said to have died by 1799 and is not listed in the 1800 census. James was bound out at age 5 to his mother's cousin Amaziah Cole of Chesterfield and Betsey was bound to Pettingill in Cummington MA. I find no record of Rachell, Ebenezer or Hannah. They may have died young. The next time I pick up the members of the family is in the War of 1812. Isaac, Joshua and King Henry all served from NY and Thomas from MA. Betsey m Joseph Vining of Cummington in 1821 in Pownel VT and settled in Plainfield MA and Thomas m two (or 3) wives in the period between 1814 to 1833 when his youngest s Moses was born in South Hadley MA. The brothers Isaac, King Henry and Joshua all settled in NY. Joshua Jr is in Utica, Oneida Co when he received a land bounty in IL for War of 1812 service (in 1818) and King Henry is in Wayne Co (Macedon) where he gets caught up in Joseph Smith's new religion (Mormons). He later abandons it. Isaac is in Genesee Country in 1830 in the Burned Out District (Batavia). I believe that Joseph is one of Joshua Jr and his probable wife Elizabeth's children. (Elizabeth is mo to Joseph) Joshua Jr is listed in the 1820 Oneida Co Census with the name QUARTS, in 1830 as QUANER and 1840 as QUONE. He never leaves Oneida Co and dies before the 1850 census. In 1850 Elizabeth is living with Joseph. Other children may be Jarvis, Elizabeth, James, and Henry. THESE ARE STILL GUESSES at this point although Jarvis and Joseph are clearly brothers. I am trying to reconstruct the families of the other two brothers at this point. I suspect, but do not know, that James, the youngest so of Joshua Sr, may have also gone to NY so there may be another family to try and define. Even my ancestor, Thomas, had a s who was b in NY in 1822 - the only one born there that I know of. The rest of his children were b in MA. If anyone has ideas as to how the clear connection between Joshua Jr and Joseph (or any of the other proposed children) can be established I would be more than happy to work on it. The answers must be somewhere. For now I've put Joshua Jr as Joseph's fa primarily on the basis of both men's living in Oneida Co. Sure could use some help on this.
