Greetings Tom; I am decendant of Captain Thomas Quantrill. He was born in 1785, in Hagerstown, Maryland, the son of Prettyman Quantrill and his consort believed to be Mary. Captain Quantrill was badly wounded by a shell fragment during the war and promoted to Major and offered a commission in the regular army. He chose instead to take up law and practiced in Maryland and Washington D.C. While living in Hagerstown he was also a blacksmith and horse trader. He lived the last 18 years of his life in Washington, D.C. and died 01 February 1862 after collapsing to the sidewalk on Louisiana Avenue NW. During this period he lived with his son, Archibald R. Quantrill, and started an insurance claims business near where he died. At the time of his death he was receiving a pension for injuries received during the War of 1812 of about $14.00 per month.
Thomas married Judith Ann Heyser, born 23 Nov 1784, died 11 Nov 1830. Their children are as follows: Mary Anna 20 Jan 1808; William Heyser 19 Aug 1809, Eliza 11 Jun 1811, Jesse D.E. 24 Aug 1815, Archibald Ritchie 8 Jan 1816 (my line), Thomas Henry 17 Feb 1813, Elliott date unknown, and Catherine C 21 Jan 1825.
Of possible interest to you is the fact that Thomas Henry Quantrill above, (who was the father of William Clark Quantrill) also had a son whom he named Thompson Quantrill, bor 03 Oct 1844. He is shown in the 1870 Census as being a soldier in Nebraska. I can find no reason to use the name Thompson so there may be something to your passed down story. I know that Mary Anna married a John Ott, but I do not know what happened to Eliza or Catherine C. Quantrill. In the event you find a connection please let me know and if you have any questions feel free to get back to me. Captain Quantrill is mentioned in several books, one of which is by Walter Lord entitled "The Dawns' Early Light". Thanks, Joe Quantrille.
