Thomas Quayle b.abt 1838, Scotland?

I have a Thomas Quayle married to my ancestor Margaret McCubbin. They appear on the 1891 Girvan, Ayrshire census - Thomas aged 53 and a seaman, b. Girvan. The two children who appear are listed as McCubbins, Janet (22) and Hugh (18). Janet may not be Thomas' daughter but Hugh does appear as Quail in the 1881 census (Thomas was not listed). Have been unable to find out any more info re Thomas and am now wondering if he was actually from the Isle of Man. Would appreciate any info or advice.
