Hello Gail,
I share some of the responsibility for the confusion surrounding a so-called "Indian Joe". First, there was no person named Indian Joe. Mary (Many Days) was born in 1813 in Council Bluffs, Nebraska, the daughter of Joseph (The St Joe Joseph) and a full blooded Otoe woman. She had a brother named Joseph, who was sometimes referred to as Indian Robidoux, born in Council Bluffs, Nebraska, in 1811. Joseph [of St Joe] was there manning a trading post at the time] This Joseph [1811] had three wives and at leat 9 children. His 1st two wives were sisters, Nah-Ka-Tom-Me and Wah-He-Cha-Cha, and his 3rd wife was Wa-Con-Don-Me. He was marriedf to the sisters at the same time. He was often confused with his half-brother, Joseph E. that was born in St. Louis, Missouri in 1802 to Joseph of St Joe, MO. Joseph E. had 2 wives, Bo-Tha-Me [Otoe] and Picayune or Picadilly [Iowa]. The Robidoux family of St. Joe never knew all of the details of the 2 Josephs or else chose to ignore the Indian connections. I hope that this straigntens out some of the details.
