John Rector 1830 New York -> California

I have an Ancestor, John Rector, who was born about 1830 in New York, to two parents who were also born in New York, but moved to California in the 1850s, and was married to Caroline Elizabeth McGimsey in 1854 in California. Any help tracing John back to New York would be appreciated.
