I think I know who the Elias Rector of the gold fields is. He is most likely the Elias Rector aka Major Elias Rector born 1802 VA who lived in Sebastian Co, AR most of his life. He is absent from the census in 1850, where his wife Catherine Duval Rector is living with three children in Crawford Co (later Sebastian Co), AR. He is then back with the family in 1860. I think he knew CSA Smith, the Cherokee indian agent, as Major Elias Rector was also an indian agent for several years and familiar with the Choctaw and Seminole. His daughter's diary started in 1866 and did not mention her father's brief stay in the gold fields. In fact, I don't think anyone has noted that this famous may was part of the gold rush as well as CSA Smith. Now, how did he know my gggrandfather, John jones of KY?
