Folks- you are all barking up either the wrong tree or a variant thereof.

Most US rhoads/rhoad family names derive from the German family name Roth (pronounced, to English ears, Roat). In SE Pennsylvania where most of the Rhoads /rhoad spellings originated, the name Rhoads/rhoad/road spelling was assigned to the Germans (PA Dutch) who had the name Roth and were forced to take the English oath of allegiance to King George about 1750. The records thus reflected the anglicized version. O f special notice is the fact that this spelling variation was used because there was an English quaker family in Philadelphia at the time and the tax collectors/officials were used to that spelling variant. Most of the Germans didn't really use the spelling till later in their wills etc which had to be in English. In the churches they still used Roth. The 2d generation was the first to use them from birth. The swearing in had to be done in Phila ,by the way, thus the English spelling of Rhoads prevailed. The Rhoads family (German) came to america from Wuertemburg,The Palatinate in 1717 and they were from Bonfeld.I am descended from one of the three Roths to arrive. I'm sure there were later arrivals who got assigned the same name as well as those quaker families who are descended from the English Rhoads family of Phila but if your family went thru or settled in Berks county or counties near there you are probably of the German Roth family.
