Judy,

Thank you for the information you sent me. I'm responding here because I want others to see what I'm sending in the event anyone can verify the information I have.

I found the reference to your Sanford Rhoads that I mentioned. It is in Mr. Anderson's book that I referenced in my last message. The main problem with his information is that he does not give his sources, so none of this has been verified by me and I can’t seem to find any sources to verify it for myself.

Knowing that, the following is extracted from Mr. Anderson's book: “Rhoades and Allied Families - Descendants of David and Celia (Copple) Rhoades.”

---------------------------

John 1 Rhoads, probably born 1795 in North Carolina married Elizabeth (Betsy) Copple who was born 1797 in North Carolina. Betsy was the daughter of John & Elizabeth (Fouts) Copple, and the sister of Celia. (I have no information about this Celia). John and Betsy had only one son that anyone knows about:

John 2 Rhoads Jr., b. 1817, North Carolina. Married about 1843 Sarah Smith (sound familiar, i.e. Smith?), b. 1821 in Indiana. In the 1850 census of Nodaway Co. Missouri, John was the next door neighbor of David Rhoads and was the nephew of Celia (Copple) Rhoads. John Jr. And Sarah had the following issue:

Edith, 3 b. 1844 in MO
Mary L. 3 1846, MO
William D. 3 b. 1848, MO
Sarah J. 3 b. 1849, MO

--------------------------

Absolom 1 Rhoads, (probably the brother of John 1 Rhoads) b. abt 1757, in Holland. (However, I have to take issue with this date and place of birth. Other records, including the 1850 census of Weaverville, Placer Co., California indicate he was born abt. 1797 in North Carolina.) He married Mary (Polly) Copple in 1818 in Indiana (I have a copy of the record of that somewhere, so I know that part is correct). She was the daughter of John & Elizabeth (Fouts) Copple. They had the following issue:

David 2 Rhoads. This might have been the David Rhoades who was killed by bushwhackers in Nodaway Co., MO, in 1857. Or he may have been the David Rhoades who accompanied Absalom to Andrew Co., in 1842. (My guess is he was the former. The David Rhoads who accompanied Absalom had different parents - Jacob Rhoads and Cradie ???? This David had several children, including my gg grandmother Mary Ann (Rhoads) (Copple) Rhoads, who married Daniel L. Rhoads in 1873 in Nodaway Co., MO)

George 2 Rhoads (no further information)

Daniel 2 Rhoads. He may have been the Daniel L. Rhoades who married Mary Ann (Rhoades) Copple, (her first husband, Samuel Copple, having died in 1869. Daniel (my gg grandfather) married Mary Ann on 22 May 1873 (as I mentioned above).

Jacob 2 Rhoads (no further information, but I believe he went west with the gold rush in 1849 or 1850 with his father Absalom. They are both mentioned in the 1850 census of Weaverville, Placerville Co., CA. Jacob later owned land in Sanel, Mendocino Co., CA and died sometime in the early to mid 1870s. I might have a record of that somewhere).

Sanford 2 Rhoads (your gg grandfather?), youngest child, b. September, 1836 in Indiana. He marred Eliza Smith (your gg grandmother) in 1858 in Missouri. Eliza was born January, 1841, and is the sister of the Sarah Smith mentioned above who married Sanford’s cousin John 2 Rhoads Jr. above. She reported her father was born in New York and her mother in Indiana. They had twelve children, six still living in 1900 in Barnard, MO. Names of these children are from the 1880 and 1900 censuses of Nodaway Co., MO.

Elija 3, b. 1863, MO
Eliza 3, b. 1865, MO
Isabell 3, b. 1868, MO
George W. 3, b. 1871, MO, lived in Rosendale, MO (he supplied information about the family in 1956)
Sarah 3, b. 1876, MO
John C. 3, b. December 1877, MO; at home, single, in 1900
Peter 3, living in Rosendale in 1956
Edna T. 3, born September, 1880, MO; at home, single, in 1900
Urnia G. 3, born October, 1882; at home, single, in 1900.
(Evidently two of the children were unknown to Mr. Anderson, but you listed them in your note to me.)

Keep in mind, I have no verification for most of this. I’ve asked several people to help me find some source information, including Mr. Anderson, but have gotten NO response.

I hope this helps,
Paul
