Henry is my great-grandfather, but little is known about him. His death certificate states he was born Feb. 18, 1837. He died Nov 20, 1914, Ottawa, Franklin Co., Kansas. http://www.texashistoryhunter.net/hh_rhodes.html When he was abt 55 ( he met & married my 19 yr old great-grandmother. She was a cook in a Section house for the railroad and he was an engineer. This was in Louisiana. He never spoke of his life before her except in broad generalities. He said he was born in Penn. (but never stated where), said he had been in the Union forces (but never which branch). He said (which doesn't make sense) that he had been a water boy because he was too young to join and had lied about his age. In 1861 he would have been 24, had he been born in 1837. He did say he lied about his age to get in, that he was 14 or 15...that would have made him born ca 1847. I believe he left a family in the north, which is why he never would discuss his past. Searching the war records, I found only one Henry Rhodes and he was a Corpl. Co. E, Sixth Michigan (The War of the Rebellion, Series I- Vol. XXVI, Part I, 1889, page 62). There was a Henry Rhodes at the end of the war in New Orleans, LA, at the Battle of Fort Hudson. In the "Special Schedule-Surviving Soldiers, Sailors, and Marines, and Widows, etc 1890" page 2, line 17, there is a Henry Rhodes who list his rank as "corporal", no company, list regiment as "13th Conn.", enlistment as "1862", discharge date "1864". Under the section marked Post Office for line 17, it states New Orleans, LA. Under "Remarks", it states "papers burnt". I believe there is also a Hiram Rhodes listed on the same page. Don't know if there is any connection. There is a Henry H. Rhodes in the Concord Twnp, lake Co., Ohio 1860 census who was 17 (b. 1843) fron Penn. living with a Daniel Woodruff family. My great-grandparents had 3 children but only 2 survived to adulthood; my paternal grandmother (my father, an only child) and her brother, Henry Howard Rhodes, Jr, all are now deceased. Henry Jr had a son but we don't know where he is, so we can't do DNA testing on him. I am hoping someone may have a missing Henry Howard Rhodes, born some time between 1840 & 1847, Penn. On the webpage (link above), I have the only photos of Henry to survive. Maybe someone will see a resemblance. Sherry Notify Administrator about this message?
