Emigration from the maritime provinces of Canada (Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, PEI, Newfoundland) was extensive after the mid-1800s, particularly with economic downturns and the decline of industries such as shipbuilding. Arguably, the largest contingent left for the Boston region but plenty went to places such as western Canada, Chicago, and California. It would not surprise me to find that your RHR was born in NS and left for greener fields in his early maturity.

I believe there were Rhodes, among the pre-Revolution New England settlers of Nova Scotia who moved from New England to Nova Scotia following the expulsion of the Acadians in the 1750s. There is a large body of material on this group (called "Planters") in Nova Scotian and Canadian sources.
