Lewis Wesley Rhodes - 1841 - possibly Roden

Almost a century ago, my grandfather told me that his father-in-law, Lewis Wesley Rhodes, born 1841, related this story. His father or grandfather had a homeplace in Tennessee. When he left home to serve in the Confederate army, Yankee soldiers passing through raped (and perhaps killed) the wife and daughters. One small boy survived by hiding in a well. When the "soldier" returned home and was told what had happened to his family, he went AWOL and became a lone sniper following the Yankee troups. After the war, he escaped punishment by changing his name from Roden to Roads or Rhodes. My facts indicate that Lewis Wesley's father was John and his mother's maiden name was Simmons.
Lewis resided in Alabama. Can anyone identify this family or a similar "fable". Please help!!
