Alexander was a farmer and resided his entire life in Craven County, NC. Lathan Riggs told a story related to him by Alexander's daughter Mary.
The story was that Alexander had made a trip north to visit William Hen Riggs and Peter Riggs of Camden County. During his trip, Alexander died of unknown causes. The family could not afford to make the trip north for the funeral. Daughter Bertha Riggs memos, mard Alexanders death approximately 1896 with no further explanation. There are some unmarked graves at the Peter Riggs cemetery in Camden County. Lathan Riggs made a memorial stone for Alexander and placed it in the Peter Riggs Cemetery Camden County. This is n ofurther information to substantiate this story.

The oldest ancestor that I have found is Nehemiah Riggs of Craven County, North Carolina. The first record I find was the 1840 NC cencus for Craven County. Nehemiah was also known as Marr and Amiah. Note from Bertha Riggs, refer to Nehemiah as William Henry Sr., But I find no futher mention of this. I have included a copy of a marriage bond for Amiah Riggs and Mary Taylor applied for in Craven County, NC. Mary was also known as Polly. The marriage bond is witnessed by James Taylor (possibly Mary's brother or father) on 10/26/1836.

The next record of Nehemiah was in the 1850 Craven County, NC census.
1850 was the first census that named the other members in the household, their ages, if they could or could not read, their occupation,their place of birth, and the total worth of the head of household. This was a great help in doing research work.
The first born were twin girls, Mary Jane and Julia Ann according to Bible records. There is no mention of Julia Ann in the 1850 cencus (died young?).
I lost track of the family for about three years until Ann Riggs Sawyer of Camden County, NC found them in a 1860 NCcencus for Pasquatank County, NC (He is listed as Nemiah Kiggs) The family name had been mispelled when it was transferred from handwritten to typed as Kiggs. Sarah Ann and William Henry have been born since the last census.
My research found the family living on what is referred to as the "old road" in Pasquotank County, between "Possom Quarter" and "Morgans Corner"
I did not find the family in the 1870 census, but found a probate attesting that Nehemiah and Mary Riggs were dead in 1869. It is apparent that the family returned to Craven County after the 1860 census due to the fact that Alexander Brice, William Oliver, Sarah and William Henry
grew up in Craven County, they lived in the Batchelors Creek area on the Will Beamon Farm. The area was called Beamons Fork. The name of the area was later changed to Washington Fork. It is located between New Bern and
Cove City.
Richard Murphy was told by a man in his late 90's that Nehemiah Riggs was a farmer. During the winter when farming had stopped the family would cut chickory trees, split them, and carve axe handles, hammer handles, et
hand, which they would carry to town to trade for supplies. They most likely traveled to town on the 9 Foot Road. This is a 9 foot wide brick road from the Bachelor area in New Bern. Much of this hand made road is still intact today.

1815 taxables, onslow county. john riggs, 1 white pole. 191 acres value of 467, on new river.
1820 manufacturing census. shows john having 1 shop with an inventory of 40 wheels with a value of $200. his business is a wheelright.
1820, wolf pitt district, onslow county, n.c. 4 males 10 to 16, 1 male 45 +, 1 female 16 to 26, 1 female 45+. 4 people are in agriculture and 3 are in manufacturing. johns son david is living beside him. no slaves.
1824 taxable property, capt. grants district. john riggs, 100 acres with value of 150. also listed, noah riggs, no property.
1827 taxable property in capt. newtons district, onslow county. john riggs sr. 199 acres.
1828 taxable property capt newtons district. john riggs sr., 1 white pole, 100 acres. also listed, bryant riggs, david riggs with 144 acres, john riggs jr. with 100 acres and noah riggs with 144 acres.

n. john resided in pasquotank county, n.c. at the time of the revolution. he went to portsmouth in virginia and enlisted. he served three years. john said he was engaged in a skirmish with the british about eighteen miles from cape charles. they retook possession of browns brig which h
ad been taken by the british. capt bracey ordered his regiment down to where the brig lay, a severe contest ensued, and the brig was retaken and the britsh were taken prisoners and sent to petersburg in va.
