Mrs. Orilla Riggs wife ot the late Cpt. James Riggs died Sept 8 aged 66 (Note 1903). She was a daughter of the late Rev Thomas Barnes and Ruth Bartholow Barnes of Harmony settlement. Five ch survive being Frank and Don of CA, Mrs Ada Creighton of SD, Mrs Worthington Whartn of near Harmony and Presley of Banesville She was sister of Oliver P Barnes of Harmon and Mrs W. Hobbs of Barnesville Burial at Harmony. [Harmony Methodist - Harmony, Somerset Township, Belmont Co OH]

Harmony Cem has Richard Hobbs 1811-1895 and son Abel Hobbs 1852-1904. The family was close to Rev Thomas Barnes in census.

James H. Riggs was 28 when he enlisted as a Capt. on 9/16/1861. He was commissioned into "D" CO. Ohio 42nd Inf. on 9/25/1861. He resigned on 12/31/1863.
From the Cambridge Jeffersonian, Cambridge, Ohio - May 5, 1892
"Capt. James H. Riggs, a cousin of Mrs. C. P. B. Sarchet of this place, died at his home in Barnesville Friday last of brain disease. The "Enterprise" says;
"Captain Riggs was born 57 years ago and for 35 years has been a faithful conscientous and zealous member of the M. E. Church. During a greater part of this time he had been an official in the church, and for years was a licensed exhorter.
He was married October 26, 1853 to Miss Orilla Barnes, daughter of Rev. Thomas Barnes, of this place, who during all these years, has been his faithful companion and who, with five children, survive him.
On the breaking out of the war, eight years later, Capt. Riggs recruited a company at Summerfield, which was attached to the 42nd Regiment - the one of which James A. Garfield was Colonel--- and, with Riggs as its captain, served during the war. Funeral services were held on Saturday, conducted by Rev. Wm. Peregoy, assisted by Rev. J. G. Gambler."

HARE, JAMES W., of Astoria, Sheriff of Clatsop County, was born in Barnesville, Ohio, September 8, 1857. In 1872 he began steamboating on the Ohio, and later engaged in railroading. He came to Oregon and was engaged in steamboating and kindred pursuits, and was Chief Engineer of the Astoria Fire Department five years and Postmaster four years. In 1894 he was elected Sheriff, and is again nominated for the office. He has been a frequent member of conventions and league meetings.
