Hi,
I am descended from Peter Robb--also spelled Raub and Rabb--b. 1742, probably in Pennsylvania. I don't know for sure where he originated, but we now have a tool to find out. Many of you are stuck in the same boat with your Robb/Raub/Raab/Rapp/etc. family. Through DNA testing, we have the ability to sort out our families, to figure out who was really related, and to conclusively figure out whether those old family stories about our great-great-great-great grandparents and their origins are true!
We have recently started a Robb/Raub DNA Project that will allow us to start making those family connections. My Robb family's results have recently come back, and I now know that our line had its early (as in several thousand years ago) origins in northern Europe, and is from a genetic branch (I1a) that is found in northern Germany, parts of Scandinavia, and the British Isles. As we get more Robbs (in all related spellings) tested, we will be able to start gathering our different lines into family groups where relationships exist.
I encourage you to visit the web site at http://www.worldfamilies.net/surnames/r/robb/index.html and consider adding your family line (from your earliest known ancestor down to around 1900) to the site.
If you are a Robb/Raub/Raab/..., please consider getting tested and adding your line to the site. Testing is easy... no blood, just wiping the inside of your cheek with a little swab. For those of you new to the idea of genetic genealogy, you can learn more by going to http://www.familytreedna.com/faq.html . You can also look at other DNA projects on the site that have been created for some of your other lines. Many now have hundreds of members participating, and I've made progress on several of my family lines recently due to other cousins getting tested and making connections. I look forward to the time when we have enough members tested to be able to identify most of the family groups.
If you are not a male Robb/Raub/Raab, please encourage your male relatives to join the Project. We are especially interested in getting results from those of you who have traced your lines back to the colonial families. There are a bunch of old Pennsylvania and Ohio Raub families that appear to be related. Several had members with the same names, and often I've had to ask, "Which one is this?" when looking at the records. Genetic genealogy now allows us to not only see if they are related, but also helps identify different branches of the family.
We now have a powerful tool that can help us get past those brick walls that have stumped us for years. Please consider becoming a part of this project and advancing our knowledge about our roots.
