Joel Rodes was my grandfather's brother and is the source of my middle name. Joel lived at Gatewood, WV, which is near Beckley, WV. Some of the Kincaids were also from the same area and may be the source of the town of Kincaid which I think is on Route 60 going from Gauley Bridge to Oak Hill, passing Beckwith on the way. The only picture I have of him is when he was in his casket in the front of his home.

My grandfather was David Rhodes, but Joel kept the original name of Rodes. David was born in 1829 and after his first wife died giving birth to twins, he remained single until he was 60 at which time he married my grandmother who was 20 at the time and they had 9 children together. He died in 1910. His cousin was General Robert Rodes born in the same year and who was killed at the third battle of Winchester (Opecon Creek). He had one other brother, Tom.

Enough trivia!
